Interchange discounts and saving money

Most Hong Kong bus-bus and MTR feeder discounts need the same Octopus. Tapping a credit card often skips the discount.

Notes dated 2026-09

  1. Use the same Octopus for both legs. Avoid a pile of convenience-store taps in between; operators cap extra transactions.
  2. Windows are often 60–90 minutes. Read that scheme’s notice.
  3. Bank cards and wallets can pay the fare and still miss the interchange rebate.
  4. Typhoon No. 8 or diversions can suspend schemes. Trust the in-app notice.

Which two routes rebate is on the KMB and Citybus sites, and on the route screen in the app. Do not memorise a random spreadsheet.

Octopus: which card tourists should buy Tourist Octopus HK$39, airport T-Union pack HK$170, on-loan adult card, iPhone Tourist Octopus, and why interchange discounts usually need Octopus—not a random bank card. Hong Kong buses: you pay the boarding stop, so short hops need a bus near the end KMB, Citybus, and LWB charge the fare stage of the stop you board. Do not start a short ride at the origin terminus.
