Stay

Stay: the neighbourhood matters more than the brand

Tsim Sha Tsui is easy, Mong Kok is loud, Jordan is handy for halal food, Causeway Bay is for shopping, Sheung Wan is quieter, Tuen Mun is cheaper and near the beach.

Star Ferry at Tsim Sha Tsui

Hong Kong rooms are quoted in square feet. Twenty-odd square metres already feels generous. First stay: walk from an MTR exit, and do not drag cases up five floors with no lift.

Questions

Kowloon or the Island the first time?

Most first-timers stay in Kowloon: A21 runs Nathan Road, food is dense, room prices vary. The Island suits people who already know the harbour crossing, want quiet, or are here to shop Causeway Bay.

Are guesthouses safe?

Licensed guesthouses are legal. Expect narrow stairs, no lift, shared bathrooms. Read recent reviews on noise and air-con. Do not leave bags in the corridor overnight.
