Data: eSIM, airport SIMs, not the land border
How to get data in Hong Kong: eSIM before you fly, airport counters, or a physical SIM in Sham Shui Po. Land ports are a poor place to buy. UK Type G plugs.

Hong Kong is 4G/5G, including most MTR stations and trailheads. Upper-deck buses and harbour tunnels still drop.
Three options
- Buy a Hong Kong eSIM before you fly (CSL, 3HK, CMHK, or a travel eSIM). Turn it on after landing. The most reliable first-timer path.
- Airport arrivals desks or kiosks (CSL, 3HK, CMHK). Convenient, usually a worse rate. Passport required.
- Physical SIMs in Sham Shui Po, Mong Kok, Causeway Bay, or Sheung Shui. Cheaper than the airport. Bring your passport. Shops will insert and test.
Where you actually land
- Airport: desks exist, pricey. Short trip: still eSIM.
- West Kowloon: possible desk, still dear; Mong Kok is close.
- Lo Wu / Futian: do not buy at the gate. Ride East Rail to Sheung Shui.
- Shenzhen Bay, Heung Yuen Wai, Huanggang, HZMB island: do not count on it. Reach Yuen Long, Tuen Mun, Sheung Shui, or the airport first.
- Sheung Wan / China Ferry: plenty of shops in town; skip terminal desks.
Plugs
UK Type G, 220 V. Mainland two-pin plugs will not fit. Get an adaptor at a convenience store. Hotels sometimes add USB.
Questions
Will a Mainland SIM work?
Usually only via roaming, which is pricey, and some apps behave differently. Use a Hong Kong number or eSIM for maps and SMS codes.
