Five days: the three-day sketch, then a walk and a spare day
Five days should not fill the map. Three days for Kowloon, the Island, and one stretch of water or town; day four Dragon’s Back or MacLehose Stage 2; day five Discovery Bay or a rain spare. The harbour once.
Notes dated 2026-09
The five-day mistake is crossing the harbour three times a day. Stay put (TST or Jordan waste the least motion). Swap the hike and the island if the weather turns. Keep the slack day.
Days 1–3 · use the three-day sketch
- Day 1 Kowloon: TST promenade, Star Ferry, a cha chaan teng, Temple Street after dark. The harbour once.
- Day 2 the Island: tram, Sheung Wan, or Chun Yeung Street early. Rain: Causeway Bay indoors.
- Day 3 pick one stretch of water or town: Cheung Chau (last ferry), Sai Kung town, or Discovery Bay. Not all three.
Day 4 · walk, pick one trail
- Average fitness or a first hike: Dragon’s Back. Bus 9 from Shau Kei Wan, alight To Tei Wan. Half to most of a day.
- Stronger legs and you want Sai Kung’s coast: MacLehose Stage 2 only — not the full hundred kilometres. Weekends have better connections. Sai Wan and Ham Tin are the point. A full day. Carry water.
- Amber rain or worse, or Signal No. 8: Sham Shui Po or the rain/budget page. Not East Dam, not Sai Wan.
Day 5 · leave slack
- If day three skipped Discovery Bay: ferry from Central Pier 3, a loop of the plaza and beach, back early.
- Spend less and skip the wind: Sham Shui Po plus North Point market.
- Flying or crossing out that day: do not add High Island or the MacLehose. Leave slack for the airport or the border queue.
Questions
Should five days include Disneyland?
Yes if you have children or came for the park — give it all of day four or five. No if you want to learn how the city rides and eats. A ticket plus queues takes the whole day. Do not pair it with MacLehose Stage 2.
