Discovery Bay: a planned seaside town, twenty-five minutes from Central
Discovery Bay is a planned north-Lantau town: beach, plaza, slower than Central. Fast ferry from Central Pier 3 in about 25 minutes; or a DB bus from Tung Chung or Sunny Bay. Not Cheung Chau, not Disneyland.
Notes dated 2026-09
Discovery Bay is first a planned seaside town on north Lantau: about 25 minutes by ferry from Central, with a beach, a plaza, and a slower pace. Not a fishing island like Cheung Chau, and not Disneyland at Sunny Bay.
How to go
- Simplest: Central Pier 3, signs for Discovery Bay. Fast ferry about 25 minutes. Adult Octopus one-way about $56 (DB ferry tariff; confirm at the pier). Resident cards are cheaper; visitors pay the ordinary fare.
- Already on Lantau: MTR Tung Chung or Sunny Bay, then a DB bus (often DB01R, DB03R). Visitor fare is around the mid-teens; trust the reader. These are residents’ buses, not franchised KMB/Citybus, so App 1933 may miss them. HKeMobility or the DB transport page is closer.
- From the airport: DB02R-type buses run, infrequently — check that day’s notice. Private cars generally cannot enter through the DB tunnel.
Once you are there
- Eat and walk around the plaza. Tai Pak beach sits in front; facilities follow the day.
- Internal residents’ buses link the blocks. First visit: the waterfront walk is enough.
- Do not expect a Cheung Chau-style bike loop of the whole island. Do not add Disneyland to the same day.
Questions
How is it different from Cheung Chau?
Cheung Chau is a fishing-village island with almost no cars. Discovery Bay is a planned residential town: plaza, beach, restaurants, and residents’ buses out. Come here for another everyday Hong Kong; rent a bike on Cheung Chau.
