Cheung Chau: a one-day island from Central
Ordinary or deluxe ferry from Central Pier 5. Rent a bike, walk Tung Wan, eat. Signal No. 8 cancels sailings.
Notes dated 2026-09
Cheung Chau is an outlying island without a street full of private cars. Walking and bikes fit. Weekends queue at the pier. A Tuesday can feel like another city.
The ferry
- Central Pier 5, signs for Cheung Chau.
- Tickets at the window or machines; Octopus usually works.
- Note the last sailing back. Miss it and you stay or charter — the charter is expensive.
On the island
- Tung Wan beach is toward the near side of the island; facilities follow the day.
- Cheung Po Tsai Cave and Pak Tai Temple: short walks. Bring water.
- The bun festival around the fourth lunar month is packed. Go for the festival only if you have patience.
Questions
Ordinary or deluxe ferry?
Ordinary is cheaper, slower, and you can stand in the air. Deluxe is dearer, quicker, more enclosed. Not rushed and you want the sea: ordinary. Bike rules follow that day’s ferry notice.
